Getting a clear picture of the mobility landscape can be tricky — there are multiple types of devices, platforms, and development tools and technologies, and they’re all evolving rapidly. Gain insight into the emerging trends in mobile devices and applications. Learn about the challenges facing mobile application developers — and the technologies for meeting those challenges — today and in the future.

If your organization is like most others in the world, you’re probably already running mobile applications or looking to mobilize (create a mobile version of) one or more of your internal (even external) applications. As you know, the Domino Web server includes features that make it easy for developers to let users access Notes applications through the Web or to expose the application’s data and business logic to other rich client applications using Web services. The problem, though, is how to mobilize these applications in a way that provides the best possible user experience while at the same time supporting the widest possible audience of mobile devices.
The Web, while cool, isn’t very fast on mobile devices, and it lacks some capabilities needed by mobile users. Ultimately, organizations need the ability to build rich mobile applications that run across multiple device platforms. Unfortunately, recent changes in the smartphone market have made this even more difficult to do.
What’s an enterprise developer to do? A good way to start coming to grips with cross-platform development issues is to dig into some of the trends in the mobile development space and identify the solutions available to developers. Let me serve as your guide in the current mobility landscape and illuminate the path ahead so you can save time and make more informed decisions as you go. The focus will be primarily on the enterprise developer (consumer mobile application developers face a completely different set of challenges).
